Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh has asked, Infosys to provide latest IT solutions to the sector that can help in the generation, transmission and distribution functions.

The Ministry had earlier constituted a task force with the objective of applying IT in improving the quality of service in the power sector.

The IT Task Force for was constituted in 2002 to review the use of Information Technology in the power sector, to identify new developments in IT for the benefit of power, specially in the area of distribution, undertake pilot projects with the help of technology, to make computer applications more consumer friendly and other related issues.

The task force was headed by the then CEO of Infosys Nandan Nilekani and other members included representatives of power utilities such as NTPC, PowerGrid, Central Electricity Authority etc.

The task force submitted its report on November 26, 2002 and is at present updating its report, which would be submitted in September, as the minister had asked for a quick review of the accomplishments since its earlier submission and what more needs to be done for the development of a smart grid that would lead to better load management.

He also emphasised focussing on distribution only as IT initiatives in generation and transmission have already been taken.
