The release of JavaFX Mobile platform marked the first day of Sun Tech Days 2009, the Indian leg of Sun Microsystems’ annual worldwide developer conference being held at Hyderabad.
The mobile application development kit is included as part of JavaFX SDK, the company’s desktop application development suite, and is available for immediate download from its Web site.
Delivering the keynote address at the event, James Gosling, Vice-President, stressed the ‘ubiquitous presence’ of Java, given the 10 billion Java-enabled devices and the six million professional Java developers in the world. Today’s release will pave way for richer mobile applications and better mobile experience, he felt.
The java platform is supported by many mobile operators and device manufacturers. It is available on more than 2.6 billion mobile phones globally.
Gosling, who is credited with the original design of the Java programming language, said that, arguably, the entire mobile gaming industry can be said to have emerged because of Java.
Taking the example of Brazil, where people file their taxes electronically and, increasingly, using a phone, he said he did not see why people in other countries will not see such a day.
JavaFX enables developers to integrate audio and video, graphics, rich text, and Web services into their applications and provides them with the tools to deliver rich Internet applications for desktop, mobile, TV, gaming consoles and other consumer platforms.
Matt Thompson, Senior Director, Developer Cloud Tools, predicted that Cloud Computing is going to be ‘the next generation of the Internet paradigm’.
He stressed the importance of being connected in the future, “Only things that are connected are going to be of value.”
He spoke about the company’s projects, named Project Kenai and Zembly that enable developers leverage the emerging cloud space.
The event attracted about 1,800 Java enthusiasts from all over the country and abroad.
