Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said that the government aims at creating two lakh job opportunities in the IT sector within five years.
He was addressing a gathering at Kundara near here on Tuesday evening after laying the foundations for the Kollam Technopark.
Achuthanandan said that with the SmartCity project poised to become a reality, the government was hopeful of achieving the target.
“The government’s policy is to decentralise IT development. The Kollam Technopark is part of a government initiative to set up IT parks in all districts. The park coming up in 40 acres on an investment of Rs.500 crore is expected to create 8,000 job opportunities,” he said.
He said the Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram had found a place of prestige on the world IT map.
Over 150 companies operated from there and the operational costs were just one-third when compared to the other IT hubs in the country, the Chief Minister said.
Over 20,000 experts are working at Technopark in buildings that comprise an area of 40 lakh sq ft. But the park is now facing space crunch.
Techno City, the fourth phase of Technopark will come up by the National Highway near Kazhakuttam on 450 acres.
