Not everything appears gloomy for the Information Technology sector, at least in Tamil Nadu. When the state’s IT policy note is tabled during the post-budget department-wise discussion, the IT minister will have a very comfortable picture to present to the assembly.

Official data points out that as of January 31, 2009, IT exports from the state stood at Rs 17,500 crore ($3.53 billion). Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) sources told TOI that this was considerably higher against last year’s figure in January, which was about Rs 13,000 crore ($3.3 billion).

This translates into a growth of 6% in dollar terms between January 2008 and January 2009 and a heady 34% in rupee terms.

“It is an encouraging sign that we have been able to hold on to our growth despite adversities. This is a positive signal showcasing the kind of talent the state has and the strength of companies that we have,” state IT secretary PWC Dawidar said.

Software exports from the state for fiscal ended March 2008 stood at Rs 28,489.50 crore ($7 billion). As many companies are yet to file data with the STPI, the state expects to cross the Rs 31,000 crore mark this year, going by the current projections
