A meeting of the state government and IT company heads in the state on Thursday in the context of some recent retrenchments, decided to form a committee to look into the matter and related tech sector issues.

The meeting, attended by chief minister VS Achuthanandan, IT secretary Ajay Kumar, the CEOs of the Technopark and Infopark and about 40 leaders of IT companies in the state. The meeting also witnessed the industry asking for relief measures in the wake of the fast-changing global scenario.

Satish Babu, honorary secretary of G Tech, the organisation that represents companies operating out of the Technopark here, said the industry players had informed the government authorities that recession was on its way and that there was a likelihood of companies having to look at different cost-cutting measures.

Babu said the industry brought to the government’s notice that IT solutions companies more than ITeS companies were likely to be impacted more severely by the global slowdown, because they were dependent on the performance of various other industries. He said tech companies had requested the government for relief in the areas of rentals and in power tariff.

The Technopark here has entrusted the design and project management of its construction activities for the park’s phase-III expansion to the consultancy consortium comprising Iyer and Mahesh, and Hafeez Contractor. The third phase expansion of Technopark involves development of 3 million sqft, making it one of the larger building projects in the IT sector in Kerala.
