US-based Sun Microsystems will focus on the emerging markets, particularly India, to boost growth of its learning service division.
The $13.88-billion company sees the current global economic slowdown as an opportunity when most people would try to hone their skill sets to stay afloat in the market.
The company is also planning to introduce new cost-effective learning models in this phase. “India is our fastest growing market for learning services. Last fiscal (June 2007- July 2008), we trained about 45,000 students in the country along with our learning partners including NIIT and Aptech. While these are paid learning programmes, we have also trained another 1,00,000 students through our community adoption programmes. Besides, we have trained 6,000 employees of various corporates, who are our clients or partners in the country,” said Karie Willyerd, VP & chief learning officer, Sun Microsystems.
In an effort to make learning cost-effective, Sun will soon be introducing new virtual learning tools. “We have an online exchange platform on the similar lines of YouTube called Sun learning exchange. This will help people post and exchange their knowledge and ideas on various technologies.
Currently, only employees of the company can post their inputs. But by the end of this year, we will make it open to all,'' she said. The company has also come out with a social networking platform to encourage peer-to-peer learning. “This will be available by next year,” she said.
