Bangalore
The Times of India (Bangalore edition)

Wipro is among five companies worldwide that has bagged the UN’s first Habitat Business Awards for sustainable urbanisation. Wipro is the only Indian company to bag this award and has won it for its sustainable LEED-certified office buildings across the country.

Wipro’s LEED-certified sustainable architecture was selected from 26 outstanding best practices by an international jury, which met in Beijing recently. The biogas plant initiative that uses all the canteen waste from its facility at Electronics City was also selected as one of the 26 Good Practices for 2009.

Some 20,000 employees access the Electronics City cafeteria everyday. The capacity of the plant is 1.5 tonnes of organic waste, and every day, one tonne of organic waste is recycled on an average.
