The Indian Institute of Information technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) is getting ready to develop new IT-based technology and tools for upgrading the techniques involved in oil exploration as a part of a project.
Giving this information, IIIT-A director MD Tiwari said that the institute would set up Centre of Automation and Process for Oil Industry with the support of the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB) to accomplish the task to devise methods in the field of oil exploration using the information technology (IT).
He added that during their recent meeting with the officials of the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas on energy crisis, the institute officials have suggested a number of new initiatives that can help in bridging the gap between demand and supply in natural oil.
In this connection, a delegation of IIIT-A experts, led by GN Pandey, visited the Centre of Excellence in the field of Oil and Energy Research at Dehradun and other institutions to explore the areas of cooperation and development. The experts identified 20 major engineering core areas like process automation, special wireless sensors, digital modelling of exploration and customised software development for which IIIT-A would begin developing tools and technology.
Tiwari added that the institute would be submitting a full-fledged work proposal to OIDB within 10 days. "As per preliminary estimates, Rs 5 crore would be required as seed money to start the work that OIDB wants us to perform for the project that is worth over Rs 50 crore," he said.
