The number of professionals to be employed in the Indian animation industry in FY09-10 is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20 percent from the existing 18 percent. Analysts at two of the big four global consulting firms say that animation will create around 2.5-3.5 lakh job opportunities by 2011, especially for those in the age group of 25-32 years.
The industry currently employs around 30,000 people. Animation expertise is also increasingly being applied to sectors such as automobile, medicine and architecture, thus generating more employment opportunities for digital artists. India is presenting itself as a favorable option for the animation industry, particularly in postproduction and 3D content development and visual effects industry. Additionally, animation has spread to diverse media like video games, mobile games and even television news content, which uses a huge amount of animation graphics. According to a Ficci-KPMG report, the Indian animation industry stands at Rs 1, 740 crore and is expected to more than double to Rs 3, 900 crore by 2013.
Anuj Kacker, global head, Arena Animation said, “Animation as a career finds favor despite the slowdown as there is a demand in this sector for young, skilled workforce. Entertainment giants like Walt Disney and Sony Pictures make television commercials and computer games and offshore a lot of their animation content work to India.” Select institutes are also able to attract overseas students. Whistling Woods International (WWI), an animation film academy started by Subhash Ghai has 14 percent international students from UK, Australia and Netherlands. The institute recently had 80 percent placement in different studios like Rhythm and Hues, Paprikaas and BIG animation. Additionally, global studios such as Walt Disney Pictures and Cartoon Network already outsource assignments to India.
John Lee, dean, WWI said, “Various international studios are setting up their units in India needing Indian talent and graduating students should be able to meet their requirements. One of the reasons students are coming from overseas as the job experience available at Indian design studios are gaining a reputation in the global market.”
