100 MILLION 'NETBOOKS' BY 2011: INTEL

Intel has targeted to sell 100 million personal computers running on its Atom microprocessor by 2011.

The Atom in Intel's latest chip that is built for "netbooks", which is primarily used for Internet browsing.

Philippines saw the official launch of the chip on Thursday.

Netbooks range from $249 to $349 (or roughly around Rs 16,000) and either run on Linux or Windows XP.

In an earlier press release, Intel's Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Sean Maloney had said, "This is our smallest processor built with the world's smallest transistors."

"This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices.

We believe it will unleash new innovation across the industry," he added.

Intel said there are more than 60 laptop and desktop designs running on its Atom chip.
