Oracle India Private Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the world’s largest enterprise software company, is scouting for business opportunities in the small- and medium-scale business outfits in north India.

Anup Verma, regional director, technology commercial sales of Oracle India Private Ltd, said the firm had started its drive to tap SMEs in April 2006 and had 107 net users in the first year in Chandigarh and parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. They had 230 users last year, he added.

He said there was tremendous business potential in Punjab, as it had over 200,000 small and medium units. The small and medium players could achieve substantial cost cutting by adopting IT solutions in various stages of their business, he added. To start with, Lalru (district Patiala)-based JCBL coachbuilder is coming up with an Oracle Lab that would help the cluster of industries located in Lalru.

Giving details, Head (IT) of JCBL Ltd I S Gujral said that the firm had been able to cut 10-12 percent of its costs since it resorted to IT solutions from Oracle. “The major saving has come from the application of IT solutions in procurement and supply chain management”, he added. “We have set aside 9-10 percent of our budget for IT and are likely to invest Rs 20 lakh in setting up the Oracle Lab", he said.

Most of the SMEs in the region have been using IT in one form or the other, and those who invest minimum, use it for payroll and attendance, he added. Verma said the recession in the economy would not deter their business plans, as such services were required more when the companies wanted to minimise their expenditure, and their softwares helped the units to maintain the data efficiently and in a transparent manner.
