NIT-WARANGAL TO INVEST RS 100 CRORE

The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, will invest Rs 100 crore over the next two years for setting e-classrooms, interactive lecture halls for 3,000 students, a 1,600-capacity modern hostel and new academic halls. It is planning to increase the intake to 5,000 by 2012 from the about 3,000 students now.

NIT, which is celebrating its golden jubilee year, has already spent about Rs 100 crore on upgrading facilities. It has added a 1,000-seat hostel building with dining facilities to accommodate 2,500 students and a 250-seat international students’ hostel, according to YV Rao, director.

To cater to industry needs, NIT had recently set up two centres of excellence — Centre for Automation and Instrumentation and Centre for Advanced Materials. It is now creating centres for energy and environment, innovation and incubation and a knowledge centre to offer new courses covering material technology, biotechnology and nano technology in the coming five years.

Currently, the institute offers BTech in eight engineering disciplines and MTech programmes in 23 specialisations. It has signed memoranda of understanding with Universities of Cincinnati and Lawrence Technology University of US, ESIGELEC and University De Technologic – De Belfort Montbeliard (UTBM) of France for exchange of faculty and students and combined research and academic programmes, a release stated.
