National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has identified 50 cities for the IT and ITES sector by classifying them as leaders, challengers, followers and aspirants.

NASSCOM Vice President Rajiv Vaishnav said 7 of these cities fall in the 'leader' category and were expected to grow two and half times by 2018. It was important to identify emerging destinations, he said, addressing a seminar on "Emerging IT-BPO Destination: Coimbatore" here last night.

At the seminar, two leading city based universities urged NASSCOM to partner them in setting up finishing schools and also to come out with a syllabus on soft skills.

Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor Prof G Thiruvasagam appealed to NASSCOM to set up a school on their campus which would benefit students and industries in the region.

At least six months' training should be imparted to the outgoing students so that they could develop skills required by the industries, he said.

Anna University Vice Chancellor R Radhakrishna requested the association to prepare a syllabus on soft skills. He said it should also help in training students opting for internships and projects.
