Wipro Technologies has set up a product qualification and compliance certification facility here that would strengthen its R&D services portfolio besides helping customers such as Texas Instruments and Harman International to test their products while reducing their time-to-market.

The company has invested $5 million in the test facility - Tarang and plans to invest another $5 million over the next few years, said Girish Paranjpe, Joint CEO, Wipro Technologies. Besides testing the products that Wipro builds for its customers, the facility would also offer third party product testing services.

“Tarang would be available as a lab-on-hire for product development companies and will provide a one stop for solution offering consultancy, pre-compliance testing and certification services in areas of mechanical, thermal, acoustic, safety and reliability,” Paranjpe said. Wipro is expecting a return on investment over three to five years, he said.

The facility is equipped to test electronic products in aerospace, automotive, computing, consumer electronics, industrial automation, medical electronics and telecommunication industries.

Launching Tarang, the former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said such a facility would enable companies to build competitive products along with the certification process.

The Wipro Chairman, Azim Premji, said the company has stepped up investments in R&D which should help the company differentiate its services offerings. Wipro, which has the largest third party R&D services team of some 18,000 engineers, serves 11 of the 15 largest telecom companies in the world, he said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Paranjpe reiterated that Wipro expects demand for IT services to improve in the second half of the current fiscal.
