SECURE POINT

In view of the terror attacks at Trident-Oberoi and Taj Hotel, the Nariman Point Association has decided to issue smart cards and confidential security code numbers to all office-goers and vehicles coming to Nariman Point offices. The move is to protect the Nariman Point business district from any future terrorist attack.

“It is a world-class business district, with 32 buildings that have big business houses. We do not want to take any risks. We will install the latest security equipment such as metal detectors, scanners and X-ray machines.

Smart cards will be issued to office-goers with magnetic code numbers and embedded microprocessors. Employees can be coded and given access to specific areas depending on their need, company affiliation, or other factors. While entering the premises, the installed equipment will recognise and allow the person access,” said Dr Earnest Joseph John II, joint secretary of the NPA.

NPA will organise a three-day workshop-cum-exhibition on security measures and equipment at Nariman Point promenade.

“We will educate office-goers on how to react at times of a crisis, such as a terrorist attack or a bomb threat. We will also demonstrate how to use the equipment available. Each and every Nariman Point building will be secured using the same system, thereby benefiting the building, the occupants and the area as a whole,” said John.

Intrusion detection systems will involve the use of door and window contacts, glass contacts, or motion sensors, in combination with audible alarms that go off when a person gains forced entry.

“An alert will be sent to the police or security station to notify the authorities. Outsiders will not be allowed access to restricted areas, such as office suites, storage facilities or parking areas,” said another member of NPA.

In areas where tighter security is called for, such as labs or IT rooms, managements will also install card combinations or biometric access systems that can scan fingerprints or handprints.
