WHAT IS DRIVING THE LCD MARKET

Even in the middle of the economic downturn Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) continue to remain top on the wishlists of most households. Last year too LCD TVs accounted for almost half of the total TV sales.

The LCD technology too has been evolving and last few years have seen enhancements both in quality and specs. Here's looking into the future of LCDs: slimmer, wider screens, built-in Wireless HD and all that is set to drive the LCD market

Screen to go wider

Be ready for a more cinematic experience at home. Manufacturers plan to soon introduce wider screens LCD TVs that will also provide a more efficient use of your screen's real estate. These LCDs will go beyond the current aspect ratio of 16:9 (aspect ratio of 16:9 determines that for every 16 inches in width, users get 9 inches in height).

Philips recently rolled out world’s first cinema-proportioned LCD television. Called Cinema 21:9, it boasts of 56-inch screen and has 21:9 aspect ratio. Analysts expect 21:9 to become a certifiable trend by the end of 2009.
