Two Mumbai-headquartered infotech companies, Mastek and Hexaware, have asked around 900 people, recently put on the virtual bench, to undergo training for skills that are in demand so as to help them get assigned to a billable project.

While Mastek feels its virtual bench staff may have opportunities in servicing insurance clients, Hexaware sees demand in enterprise resource planning (ERP) and business intelligence.

Kalpana Jaishankar, head of HR at Mastek, said, “Of the 425 people put on virtual bench at Mastek, around 85 percent chose to stay. We constantly send mails to these employees, most of them trainees, to register for our tests and also get them to do a few internal assignments.” Mastek had put people on virtual bench at its Mumbai and Pune centres.

Said Hexaware Technologies chief people officer Deependra L Chumble: “We have a fully dedicated department for this (training) called Hexavarsity, which conducts class room training and web-based training programmes from time to time. We will focus on the demand from our existing customers, which encompasses ERPs, new technologies and business intelligence.”
