Tamil Nadu Government, in association with National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), is planning to conduct a special campaign ‘Empower IT’ in the city at the end of this year to give a fillip to the much-delayed Salem IT-SEZ Park.

NASSCOM Regional Director K. Purushothaman said key persons from IT and IT-enabled services companies would be invited to Salem and see for themselves the city’s potential for IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It would be a major initiative which would enable this tier-II city to attract IT majors to set up their units, Purushothaman said.

Top executives from IT companies would attend panel discussions to be held as part of the event. Competitions would be held for students in educational institutions which would demonstrate to the IT industry availability of technical manpower in Salem. “Salem has a great potential and the event will motivate IT firms to invest in this part of the State,” he added.

The State government had already allotted 164.24 acres of land for IT SEZ and was promoting it through the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu.

A few IT firms had already expressed their willingness to establish units in the Salem SEZ, Purushothaman said.

Lack of proper air connectivity to Salem was the only cause for concern. This had to be addressed to attract investments from the IT sector, he said.
