Spanco Telesystems, a Mumbai-based telecom solutions provider, is betting big on demand for in-building solutions (IBS) from all telecom carriers in India to reduce the call drops that happen when a cell phone user is inside buildings.

Termed ‘dead spots’, call drops inside buildings are usually caused by high bandwidth congestion as 70% of all mobile phone calls originate from and terminate in buildings.

Deepak Bhagchandaney, a director at Spanco Telesystems, said that telecom players across the country are looking at wire-line support for their wireless networks in areas where congestion is a problem.

The company has initiated talks with various real estate players to complete the legalities associated with setting up of IBS infrastructure in buildings, hotels, technology parks and airports.

“The demand for IBS in India seems to be tremendous as telcos have begun asking for 500 building contracts at one go even before doing a feasibility study,” said Bhagchandaney.

For the segment, Spanco plans to leverage its collaboration with Shyam Telelink, a telecom solution provider with expertise in IBS. A typical IBS comprises antennae, repeater and amplifier, which together help improve weak mobile phone signals inside houses, offices, hotels, restaurants and underground parking.

The IBS market is pegged at Rs 4,000 crore in the next four years. Spanco hopes to get a major share of this market as it is the only player to provide neutral IBS hosting facility, which supports wireless networks of all telcos. The company aims to bring 500 million sq ft under IBS by 2012.

Meanwhile, Spanco has bid for the IT, operations solution systems (OSS) and billing solution systems (BSS) part of BSNL’s impending 90 million GSM lines tender.

The Rs 6,000-crore portion of the GSM tender has other bidders such as TCS, HCL and Satyam. In July, Spanco had bought 15% stake in Vihaan Networks with an aim to tap rural telecom opportunities.
