Driving this initiative is the embedded markets division (EMD) of Intel, which focuses on technology used in specific purposes like car entertainment devices, retail stores and medical instruments. As part of this programme, the Bangalore-based KTwo Technology Solutions has used the Intel technology platform to come out with two medical devices, which can potentially be priced lower than the existing ones.
As an Intel India Design house programme member, KTwo has built two medical devices using the Intel technology architecture and it is now test marketing the device. KTwo CEO Ananth Koppar said its two healthcare solutions could address the issue of telemedicine as well as reduce the time for diagnostics.
Sanat Rao, marketing director - emerging markets, EMD, Intel India said their technology architecture provides a foundation for high performance while using low power. The two solutions developed by KTwo include Cytosight, a digital microscope, and Tomosight, which is used in tele radiology.
Under the Intel India Design house programme, companies can adopt the technology platform of Intel suited to their requirements. Rao said they are constantly looking at the requirements of different business verticals and bringing in the necessary technology. Intel also provides marketing support to these companies enabling them to showcase their products.
EMD focuses on 10 verticals ranging from vehicle infotainment, gaming and physical security to aerospace. Intel started this business in the mid-70s and chips used for PCs are re-engineered for the embedded devices.
Intel sees great potential in the EMD business. For now, its highest traction is coming in from the retail and financial services sectors.
