Duros 8404 Tablet PC

The Intel Atom 1.6GHz N270 is snappier than 1GHz Celeron M that was placed in last year’s Duros tablet. In an effort to make the 8404 viable once more, Duros has introduced an equally rugged new model with swappable battery and an 8.4-inch SVGA touchscreen. It will run Windows XP and is equipped with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and has 1GB of RAM.

Ultra Light Notebooks

Intex has come out with its compact and ultra-light notebooks. All those who want to pack their world in something as small as 'ten inch' can now opt for INTEX N101-WC1100. It comes in two uber-cool variants- chic red with a classy design. The miniature-PCs have a 10.1" display and weigh just 1.2-kg (with battery). Equipped with Intel Atom N270 processor, they are power efficient and provide a fast day-to-day computing experience. The notebooks are priced in the range of Rs.18900 to 19400.

Samsung launches LCD monitor series

The feature-rich, Lavender series, which is available in 21.5-inch and 23-inch screen sizes and cost Rs 12,500 and Rs 13,500 respectively, offer consumers complete display solutions for their entertainment and business needs.

Samsung’ new HMX-U10 fixed-focus, ultra-compact camcorder takes 10 megapixel stills or 1920 x 1080 Full HD H.264 video to SDHC cards. It also has a 2-inch LCD so you can playback, edit, or upload your videos using the built-in Intellistudio software and USB cable, to Youtube. Unfortunately, Samsung makes no mention of image stabilisation. It'll ship in September for $200.

Toshiba's 'ARTFUL' Laptops

Toshiba India has launched its new Artful series of notebooks. The range comprises 2 mini notebooks and 4 mainstream notebooks.

The new range is priced between Rs 22,990 to Rs 53,490 excluding taxes.

The range includes NB200 notebook, which comes in vibrant colors and textured design patterns. The 10.1-inch diagonal wide LED screen mini notebook comes in Cosmic Black Color with Fusion Stripes and Black Flat Keyboard and Satin Brown Color with matt finish.

There's a QWERTY keyboard and a laptop-sized touchpad. A 3D-accelerometer monitoring system dynamically detects free falls, shocks or vibrations. It rapidly moves the HDD head from between the platters protecting valuable data stored on the high capacity (up to 160GB) HDD.

The notebook is powered by 1.60GHz Intel Atom processor N270 / 1.66GHz Intel Atom Processor N280 with Intel 945GSE graphics chipset and comes preloaded with Windows XP Home. There's also Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, Wifi (802.11 b/g)and 10/100 Ethernet. There are also two USB 2.0 ports and a unique USB 2.0 port with sleep-and-charge function that enables users to charge portable electronics and mobile phones even when the unit is turned off. Its advanced multimedia and communication capabilities prove that a small form factor Notebook can yet be ready for business or multimedia applications. The NB 200 has a battery backup of 3.51 hours.

Hewlett-Packard is getting small. A gaggle of miniaturised notebooks, announced this week and collectively called the Mini 1000, will be available in various configurations that begin at $379. The group is described as less capable than full-fledged laptops, but ideal for using the Internet on the go. Most models operate with Windows XP, including a $399 version available this week, fitted out with an 8.9-inch screen and an 8-gigabyte solid-state drive. For $50 more, buyers can get a 10.2-inch screen without increasing the case size (10.3 by 6.6 by 0.99 inches). Other variations include larger-capacity solid-state and revolving hard drives. A Linux version with mobile applications will be $379 when it ships in January. All have Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth is an option. A cellular-data version is due out in December. Weighing in at 2.25 to 2.4 pounds, depending on screen size, these devices can almost go from shoulder bag to purse - or even a generously sized pocket.

APPLE LAUNCHES LED CINEMA DISPLAY

US-based IT major, Apple on Thursday launched its LED cinema display and redesigned laptops that offers advanced features to customers.

The cinema display features 24-inch LED-backlit wide-screen display with built-in iSight video camera, mike and speakers and an integrated MagSafe charger, three USB 2.0 ports and the new mini display port, the company said here in a statement.

"The new LED Cinema display is the most advanced display that Apple has ever made," Apple's Senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, Philip Schiller said in the statement.

The new LED Cinema Display will be available from November through Apple's authorised resellers for Rs 60,900, the company said.

The company also launched an all new MacBook family that redefines the notebook design for a cheaper price, the company said.

The new MacBook delivers top features like all metal enclosure, high performance 3D graphics and LED-backlit displays starting at Rs 79,700, the company said.

The product will be available through Apple's authorised centres from next month.

CANON INDIA LAUNCHES 85 NEW PRODUCTS

Digital imaging company Canon India on Wednesday said it has launched 85 new products in India, its biggest product launch in the country.

The company launched products across various divisions, which includes digital cameras, digital video camcorders, printers, All-in-Ones, digital copiers, software applications, cable ID printers and card printers.

Cable ID printing and card printing are two new areas that the company today entered into with this launch.

The card printers produce drivers licenses, employee badges, government and college ID cards, prepaid phone cards, IC chip cards and other identification cards and badges.

"The market size for this printer is approximately Rs 100 crore and it is growing at 30 percent per annum," Cannon India Senior VP Alok Bhardwaj said.

The Cable ID printers market is a niche one and these products are used for printing on sharp, durable and weather-resistant lettering on any labels or tubes like construction, control panel and manufacturing industries.

"Canon will be distributing these through a national distributor based in Pune called Onyx," he added.

HP UNVEILS DESIGNER NOTEBOOK PCS

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday unveiled four new laptops, including a special edition stylish notebook PC designed by U.S.-based renowned fashion designer Vivienne Tam.

The three new inspirational HP imprint designs notebooks are from the HP Pavilion DV4 and DV5 series. Priced in the range of Rs. 40,000-Rs.90,000, the state-of-the-art notebooks will be available in the market from the first week of November.

Similarly, the HP Pavilion Vivienne Tam special edition notebook PC will be launched in India early next year with a priced tag of around Rs. 45,000. HP has about 33 percent market share in the country’s laptop segment.

Addressing a press conference here, HP’s Senior Vice-President (Global Marketing) of Personal Systems Group (PSG) Satjiv S. Chahil said: “We continuously work to ensure that our HP Pavilion line appeals to new markets and segments. Vivienne’s fresh and authentic design speaks to an intrinsic part of a digital lifestyle-personal expression.” According to HP India’s President (PSG) Ravi Swaminathan, the company plans to strengthen its market leadership position with an aggressive ‘go-to-market’ strategy by increasing its retail footprint across 650 cities and expanding retail partner network to over 10,000 by this year-end.

HP’s introduced two new special edition series that feature new imprint designs: dv4 and dv5 special edition. The 15-inch dv5t special edition is available starting at $949 and is decorated with the HP renewal imprint finish. The Intel based dv5tse is available direct from HP and can be customised to order with a Bluray drive and up to a 400GB hard drive. The 14-inch dv4t special edition notebook starts at $1,099 and is wrapped in HP’s intensity imprint finish, which has a wave theme. An AMD based version called the dv5z special edition will be available form at Best Buy for $1,099. Special edition dv5tse and dv4se carry a $150 premium compared to standard edition notebooks with identical specs.

AGILENT SET TO LAUNCH NEXT-GEN DNA SEQUENCER

Agilent Technologies, the $5.4-billion global measurement company, is set to launch the next-generation DNA sequencer by end of 2008.

The new high throughput crunching machine would be able to do pinpointed sequencing of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of portions of the human genome.

This would, in effect, mean faster and cheaper method of getting the desired genetic information from the sample of an individual. At present, DNA sequencers rapidly sequence the entire genome, giving out large amounts of data.

The DNA sequencer, called ‘Sure Select’, will be globally launched, including in India in the next 2-3 months, said Chris Grimley, Senior Marketing Director (Genomics), of Agilent Technologies Life Sciences Unit.

The machine would have the ability to sequence DNA in a massively parallel manner as well as easily target specific regions of the genomes under study, he said

Agilent Technologies is amongst the leaders in high throughput DNA sequencers. It had acquired Velocity XI, US towards the end of 2007 to enhance its robotic capabilities, he told Business Line here on Monday.

C-DAC LAUNCHES NEW SOFTWARE

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), has launched a new software BOSS (Bharat Operating Systems Solutions) Linux 3.0 in 18 Indian languages which will help the governments across the country in rolling out their e-governance initiatives. The free open source software can be installed on C-DAC’s website. C-DAC has also signed an agreement for deploying this new operating system with four states including, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Bihar and Tamil Nadu. By the end of the year, five more states will be signing an agreement with CDAC, according to M R Rajagopalan, director, C-DAC, Chennai.
