What more could the world’s most famous search engine, with its secret algorithm and lucrative advertising model, want? In the face of stiffening competition, it seems Google is looking to evolve.
Twitter, the new kid on the block, has shaken things up. Google has admitted that Twitter’s real-time search is the future. Now, it’s reported, Google may be developing a similar microblogging engine.
After better machines and better operating systems, competition in the tech world may soon provide users with better, and more contextual, Internet searches. Microsoft’s Bing, launched last month, is already a step in this direction. This weekend, social networking website Facebook also took a Twitter-like leap by providing URLs, or uniform resource locators, with a user name of one’s choice. Among other advantages, this allows easier searches, giving Facebook a leg-up in advertising.
A few years ago, after vanquishing old competitors, Google was the unrivalled king of search. But in a sector as dynamic as technology, no throne remains unchallenged.
