The citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad can now register their civic complaints by sending an SMS. Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma said on Monday that the civic body has started an SMS grievance redressal system, a mandatory requirement under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Sharma said the system has been started on a trial basis from March 25. "We have so far received 22 complaints out of which 11 have been addressed," he said.

Civic officials said after receiving the complaint through SMS, it will be forwarded to the respective department. The official of the particular department will not only have to take cognisance of the SMS, but also ensure that it is resolved to the satisfaction of the citizen.

The official will also need to inform the citizen about the status of the complaint through an SMS.

The system is being activated through software developed by civic engineers. The commissioner will keep track of the complaints made by citizens, its status and the efforts taken by officers to resolve them. Accordingly, he will initiate action, said PCMC officials.

A team of civic engineers is carrying out the trials of the system.

PCMC computer department head Neelkanth Poman said, "A citizen will have to send an SMS to us, which will be routed to the central server. The complainant will immediately get an acknowledgement. The person will keep getting SMSes about the status of the complaint."
